Η διαδρομή του Κλασικού Μαραθωνίου Αθηνών είναι η ίδια που διένυσε ο ήρωας οπλίτης Φειδιππίδης, για να μεταφέρει το μήνυμα της νίκης στους Αθηναίους, ξεψυχώντας αμέσως μετά. Σαν σύγχρονες ήρωες, όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες στον Κλασικό Μαραθώνιο Αθηνών, δεν αγωνίζονται για τη νίκη.
